Magno (far right) races for the win
(29 October 2014. Pasay City, Philippines) Sole Philippine representative Kathryn Victory Magno, 22, clinched three bronze medals in the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy held for the first time in the Philippines.
SM hosted the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2014 at the SM Skating Rink in Megamall’s Mega Fashion Hall from October 21 to 23.
Counting the tournament as her second official competition, Magno finished 3rd place in all rounds of the Senior Ladies’ division, winning three bronze medals. Magno clocked in a time of 3 minutes 6 seconds on the 1,500 meter race. She finished in 55.443 seconds in the 500 meter race and 1 minute 55 seconds in the 1,000 meter race. Delegates from South Korea dominated all categories.
“Honestly it didn't really sink in that I was making history as the first Filipino speed skater till after the competition was finished and completed. It is a huge honor to be the first medalist and I am very proud to represent the Philippines as well as the Philippine Skating Union in short track speed skating,” Magno said.
Magno also said she sees a brighter future ahead in speed skating for the Philippines.
“It is very exciting and inspiring to know that a tropical country such as Philippines can give birth to talented winter athletes like myself. The future is very bright for SM Skating Rink and Philippine Skating Union,” she said.
A total of 71 international delegates from across Asia flew to the Philippines to vie for the gold medal in the 2014 Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy. Usually held in South Korea or Japan, the International Skating Union through its regional arm, the Asian Skating Union partnered with the Philippine Skating Union to stage the country’s very first speed skating competition.
Magno is a former Fil-Am National Figure Skater of the Philippine Skating Union. She started figure skating at age 5. She admitted that is was quite a challenge to shift from figure to speed skating.
“The main challenges I faced when transitioning to speed skating was adjusting to the position and form. I am so used to holding myself upright with a strong posture and graceful arms, whereas in speed skating you're down low in a squat position with arms still behind your back,” Magno said.
She has skated and trained for the Philippines in figure skating from 2008-2011, particularly with American and Philippine Coaches like: David Glenn, Justin Dillon, Coach Nardie, Coach Dale and Coach Jerico. She has also trained at Oakland, California once a week on a track based session and everyday during the week in San Jose. In the next few months speed coaches will be prepping her to represent the Northern California Speedskating Association at State Championships and Age Group Nationals for this upcoming season. Lastly, she completed her first race last month and was able to earn second overall in her division—skating in three distances.
One of her goals is to represent the Philippines in the Winter Olympic Games in Korea in 2018.
Her portfolio includes skating in two International Events and three Philippine Nationals. Since 2012, she has taken a step away from ice skating to dedicate time to school and work. She is now a graduate of the Art Institute of Sunnyvale, California and currently a full time Production Artist at Catapult Works located in Campbell, CA.
