SM Markets is “Here to Serve” from Aparri to Gensan

SM Markets, the country’s biggest food retail chain, spans its full coverage of the Philippines from its Aparri store up north to its General Santos branch down south. SM Markets has a total of 265 branches nationwide to date. SM Markets expands its stores at a rate of stores per year, bringing its world-class food shopping in every city and municipality in the Philippines. It aims to bring its stores to the far reaches of the country, even in places no one imagined an SM Markets store can open, to deliver world-class products and services to every Filipino household.

From SM Supermarket to SM Markets

The first SM Supermarket opened in 1985; a crucial component to completing Henry Sy’s dream store that sells everything. Through constant innovations like introducing the first barcode scanners, the use of eco-friendly reusable bags, dedicated customer assistants, and the reinvented turon with langka, SM Supermarket maintained a step ahead of its food shopping competitors. In 1995, the group opened the neighborhood store, Savemore Market, to bring SM closer to its customers. Six years later, the first SM Hypermarket was opened which combined a supermarket and a department store. The three were later unified under the umbrella brand SM Markets.

Uplifting Communities

Having a holistic view of the disparities of rural and urban markets pushed SM Markets to close the gap through its stores, especially those in remote areas, which act as main shopping centers for their communities. SM Markets also contributes to its communities’ progress as top taxpayers. In fact, the group has been recognized 30 times by different cities and municipalities as their top tax payer. SM Markets has also received 3 Corporate Gold Bagwis seals and 163 store level Gold Bagwis Seals from DTI. SM Markets has also bagged the Philippine Retailers Association’s (PRA) Best Supermarket and Best Hypermarket of the Year awards with SM Hypermarket earning Hall of Fame status for winning back-to-back from 2014 to 2015. SM Markets has won countless more awards for displaying excellence in both customer and community service.

For over 30 years, SM Markets has taken bold steps to push the envelope further with continuous innovation and aggressive expansion. It has filled a long list of contributions to local retailing but it will never stop continuously improving grocery shopping in the country.
